Finally broke down and went to Disneyland today - so you can’t make fun of me or tell me about why I need to go to Disneyland ever again.

Gotta say, with Erin Pearce as a guide (she used to wear the Minnie and Mickey costumes at the park before her stint as Brobee on Yo Gabba Gabba), it would’ve been difficult not to have fun. She’s knowledgable as shit. Also I bought a sexy new shirt to hit da clubs in.

Job Seekers: Don’t be discouraged! Make things or sell things that you hire people to make.

I started contracting after I had a difficult time getting a job. I jumped from Computer Science to the web in 1999 when I saw some amazing things being done with Flash. I was spending a lot of time drawing vectors with code when this browser based plug-in was doing the things I wanted computers to do very, very quickly.

The only people doing anything in Flash were advertisers, so I thought I’d be a shoe-in for a job there. I was wrong. I made a portfolio of work, some HTML websites, comics, gifs and Flash art projects I had done. I built little wooden CD boxes with transfer printing and executable discs. I dropped them off at Periscope, Olson, Fallon, I had heard of none of these places at the time, but I wanted to make stuff. I got interviews right away and was stoked to work with enormous zero to four person interactive teams.

I hit the town, this is what I was told:

“No one is going to hire a programmer, there is a lot of software coming out soon that lets anyone make a website.”

“You didn’t finish your degree?? I VALUE a formal education here, I have a degree in HIstory and use it every day….(10 more minutes about his college experience)”

“Click click, did you bring a book? You should print this stuff on paper. I only hire people with books.”

“Do you have a Mac or PC?” A PC but I have use…”We have Macs.”

“It looks like you like to draw, maybe you should be an illustrator or a cartoonist or something.”

“You’ll never be able to do motion on the Web, you should go to film school.”

“I’d hire you but you might take my job.”

“Does this CD work on a Mac?” Yes, it works on both! “That’s impossible. “

An art-director friend of mine worked at Campbell Mithun and he hired me to program sites for him on a contract basis. I never applied for a job again. We could do whatever we wanted, advertisers would hire us just to get the “outside the box” option that never got produced. We hopped around to other experiences but eight years later we started PUNY together.

We animated a whole minute in 2 hours!

With a bunch of our commercial work we’re not allowed to put their stuff on our site or blog but we also just forget to do it. So OH YEAH, we’ve been producing live-action video and design for a jewelry client. While we’ve done plenty of live action, we’re not really known for it but Kristoffer was a video producer at Fallon so he makes it seem effortless.

Diagnosing and fixing visual jank

More and more interactive animation is occurring via Javascript these days, and complex animations can, at times, be choppy and/or visually perform less than smoothly. When that’s the case, it can be tricky to pinpoint the source of the visual hiccups in the Javascript code.

Paul Irish recently posted a video showing how “diagnose and fix visual jank” with Google Chrome (Canary) to help optimize visual smoothness, using Timeline Frame Mode in the dev tools.

Quite impressive. A process I’ll definitely keep in mind for future projects. If you’re into this kindof nerdy developer thing, check out Paul’s walkthrough via the YouTube link below.
